Silica gel basics
No. Despite the name it is a hard, granular solid — supplied as irregular crystals or spherical beads. Grain sizes run from around 0.5–1.0 mm for fine applications up to 9–12 mm for dynamic drying duty. The name is historical, not descriptive.
It does not. Water molecules are trapped inside its internal pore network while the material itself remains totally dry to the touch. It does not swell, dissolve or change shape as it loads, which is why a sachet can sit directly against a product.
Yes. It adsorbs water vapour by physical means rather than through a chemical reaction. The distinction matters: nothing is consumed or converted, which is why the process can be reversed by heating and the same gel used again.
Silica gel will adsorb up to 40% of its own weight in moisture. Specific grades vary — our non-indicating grade is published at ≥70% at 90% RH, while blue indicating is a minimum of 33% at 100% RH. Capacity always depends on the humidity it is working against.
It is non-toxic and non-flammable, very inert, and has a very high melting point. It transports safely and requires no dangerous goods handling. The sachets carry a do-not-eat warning because they are a choking hazard and not food, not because the gel is poisonous.
The materials used to make silica gel sachets are specifically chosen to be breathable. Water vapour passes through the pouch wall freely while the gel itself stays contained. Tyvek, non-woven, paper and cloth all work this way.
Choosing and using
As a working rule, 5 grams of silica gel are needed for every cubic foot of enclosed volume — roughly 170 grams per cubic metre. Increase that for long storage, a permeable enclosure or cargo that carries its own moisture. Our desiccant calculator will do the arithmetic for you.
Larger enclosures need more gel, and it is better to use one correctly-sized sachet than several small ones — fewer units to handle, fewer to miss, and a lower packing cost. We stock fourteen standard weights from 0.5 g to 5 kg precisely so most applications can be served by a single sachet.
It is really only effective in an enclosed environment. In a space where new air is constantly introduced the gel will simply saturate and stop working. Sealing the enclosure is what makes the dose meaningful — desiccant in an open crate is wasted.
Yes. The blue self-indicating gels can be seen through the sachet material, so the sachet reports its own condition without being opened. Orange cobalt-free indicating gel is available for markets that restrict cobalt chloride.
Within a closed or sealed moisture barrier, alongside a humidity indicator so you can see when replacement is needed. The barrier, the desiccant and the indicator work as one system; leaving out any of the three tends to produce disappointing results.
Silica gel for in-pack protection and general use. Clay where cost matters or temperatures are low, and in defence packaging. Calcium chloride for containers and any application where the water load is far beyond what a 40% capacity material can hold.
Storage, life and regeneration
Yes. The silica gel does not need to be activated or generated before use. It is always supplied in a dry condition and works from the moment the pack is opened.
Almost indefinitely while properly sealed. Under standard conditions the practical shelf life is between 4 and 12 months. Open sachets should not be left exposed for more than about 15 minutes — they will begin taking up ambient moisture immediately.
By heating at 100–120 °C to drive off the adsorbed moisture. Breather charges are typically regenerated at around 150 °C for two hours. Regeneration can be carried out repeatedly, though indicating crystals will eventually lose colour strength even while the gel itself still works.
Air can only hold a certain amount of water vapour at a given temperature. Relative humidity is the actual moisture content expressed as a percentage of that saturation point. The practical goal in packaging is to keep it below 50%, since most moisture damage mechanisms slow sharply beneath that.
It is supplied non-indicating white, or self-indicating using moisture-sensitive indicators. Blue turns light pink as crystals or white as beads; orange turns green and is cobalt-free. The colour is a functional signal, not decoration.
Ordering, customisation and supply
It varies by product. Most bulk silica gel and packed desiccants start at 25 kg. Canisters and roll form start at 20,000 pieces because they are made for automated lines; continuous strip is 100,000 pieces. Some items — clay pouches, desiccant bags, our hanging container desiccant — start at just 25 pieces so you can trial them.
Yes. Custom and odd sizes are a routine part of what we do, along with custom pouch materials, printing to your artwork and application-specific configurations. Tell us the enclosure and the requirement rather than a product code and we will specify it.
Yes. Printed pouches are available to your artwork. Tyvek in particular takes print well and is one-side sealed for that reason.
Yes. DMF-free and cobalt-free grades are available across the silica gel range and a DMF-free declaration is supplied with shipments. This matters for footwear, leather, textiles and consumer goods going to markets that restrict dimethyl fumarate.
MSDS across the range. SGS and RoHS documentation is available for the Tyvek desiccant packs, and the food grade desiccant is SGS certified. Tell us what your customer or auditor requires and we will confirm what we can supply before you order.
Yes — we supply into more than 40 countries, with ISPM-15, IATA and ISO compliant packaging for global shipments. Our own container desiccant range exists because we ship this way ourselves.
That is usually the most useful conversation. Send us the product, the enclosure dimensions, the route and the storage period, and we will come back with a desiccant type, a dose and a format rather than a price list. Technical consultation is part of the supply, not an extra.
We manufacture in-house at Vadodara, which keeps lead times short for standard products. Custom sizes, printed pouches and large container quantities depend on specification — we will confirm a date with your quotation.
