  3. Compare grades

Every grade, side by side.

The three silica gel colours adsorb broadly the same way. What separates them is whether anyone will look at the sachet, and whether cobalt is acceptable in your market.

Silica gel grades

Published technical figures

Every number here is our own published specification for that grade. Scroll the table sideways on a narrow screen.

A dash means the figure is not published for that grade at that condition — not that performance is zero. Ask us if you need a specific measurement for a specification.

Colour change

What the indicator is actually telling you

Drag the slider to see how each indicating grade shifts as it takes up moisture.

Dry · blueSpent · pink

Blue crystals

Cobalt chloride. Strongest contrast of the three.

Dry · blueSpent · white

Blue beads

Spherical form. Low dusting, feeds machines cleanly.

Dry · orangeSpent · green

Orange

Cobalt-free. Highest surface area in the range.

One caveat worth knowing. Indicating grades gradually lose colour strength through repeated regeneration while the gel underneath still adsorbs perfectly well — the dye tires before the desiccant does. Faded material is not necessarily spent, but it has lost the thing you were paying for.

Beyond silica gel

When a different material is the right answer

Comparison of desiccant materials
Material Capacity Effective range Regenerable Typical use
Silica gel up to 40% 30 – 90% RH Yes, 100 – 120 °C In-pack protection, general industrial use
Clay up to 50% Favours low temperature Yes Cost-sensitive volume, defence packaging
Calcium chloride over 200% High humidity No — single use Shipping containers, high-moisture cargo
Molecular sieve around 21% Below 30% RH Yes, 250 – 300 °C Dew-point specifications, refrigerants, gas drying
Activated alumina Varies Tolerates liquid water Yes Compressed air drying, water treatment
Oxygen absorber n/a — scavenges O₂ Sealed packs No Rancidity and oxidation, used with a desiccant
