The context
Textiles arrive at the port having already absorbed ambient moisture, then sit in a steel box for five weeks. The fabric itself acts as a moisture reservoir, which is why textile containers generate their own condensation even when the cargo looked dry at loading.
Textile cargo carries so much inherent moisture that container-level calcium chloride does most of the work; sachets inside the carton handle the rest. DMF-free grades are used throughout for garment applications.
Moisture risks
Each of these has its own threshold and its own failure signature. Knowing which one you are fighting is what sets the target humidity.
Mildew staining
Mildew spots on finished garments cannot be laundered out and write off the carton.
Colour migration
Dyes bleed between layers once fabric is damp under compression.
Odour on arrival
Musty odour triggers rejection at retail inspection even where the goods are otherwise sound.
Cotton and natural fibre rot
Extended damp storage weakens natural fibres.
Carton collapse
Corrugated boxes lose compression strength as they take up moisture, and stacks fail.
