Metal & Engineering Product Protection

Keeping bare machined surfaces above the corrosion threshold in crates and long-term store.

The problem

What actually goes wrong

Steel corrodes when the relative humidity at its surface passes roughly 60%. Below that, corrosion effectively stops. The entire objective of packing a metal component is to hold the air around it below that threshold for as long as the part is in the box.

The answer

Seal the enclosure, then put in enough desiccant to hold the enclosed air below 50% RH for the intended storage period — with margin for the moisture that will permeate in.

The method

How to get this right

A repeatable sequence, in the order that matters. Skipping the first step is the usual reason the rest disappoints.

Our recommendation: Silica gel bags of 500 g to 5 kg sized to crate volume, hung from the crate frame, with a blue indicating fill so the condition is readable.
  1. Seal first

Desiccant in an unsealed crate is wasted. A barrier liner is what makes the dose meaningful.

  2. Measure the enclosed volume

Net air volume after the part is in place, not the external crate dimensions.

  3. Calculate the charge

About 170 g per cubic metre as a baseline, increased for long storage or a permeable enclosure.

  4. Hang, do not bury

Suspended bags sit in the air space and see the moisture; bags under the load do not.

  5. Add a visual check

Indicating fill or an indicator card lets stores staff assess condition without unpacking.
