Electronics Moisture Protection

Dry packing that meets moisture sensitivity level procedure, with the evidence to prove it.

The problem

What actually goes wrong

Moisture-sensitive devices absorb water through their plastic packaging while they sit in stores. At reflow that water flashes to steam and cracks the package from the inside. The component looks fine and fails in the field.

The answer

Dry packing: a moisture barrier bag, a desiccant charge sized to the bag area, and a humidity indicator card that shows whether the pack held. The card is what turns the procedure into evidence.

The method

How to get this right

A repeatable sequence, in the order that matters. Skipping the first step is the usual reason the rest disappoints.

Our recommendation: Tyvek desiccant packs plus a multi-spot indicator card inside every moisture barrier bag; foil tape to close and repair the barrier.
  1. Identify the sensitivity level

The MSL rating of the device sets the floor life and the humidity that must be maintained.

  2. Size the desiccant to the bag

Charge is calculated from barrier bag surface area and intended storage period, not from carton volume.

  3. Select the indicator range

Choose a card whose spots bracket the threshold in your procedure — commonly 5–15% or 10–60%.

  4. Seal and record

Seal the bag, record the date, and treat the floor-life clock as starting at opening.

  5. Bake if exceeded

Components past floor life are baked before reflow rather than risked.
